My weight loss journey was a long road, and thankfully it led me to a successful low carb diet plan that I feel I can stick with long-term – the keto diet!
Here’s the condensed story…
My weight gain started around 3rd or 4th grade, and I have been overweight and fat my entire life. Not obese, but always 20-30 lbs higher than where I wanted to be.
The first time I tried to get healthy was my freshman year in college. But I really didn’t know how to lose weight. I went to the gym and made better eating choices about half the time. The other half I was eating like a normal college student which meant ramen, snacks and large meals from our cafeteria buffet.
Even though I gained muscle, I still retained much of my belly fat.
As the years went by in college, I became less active and drank more beer. My weight hovered around 175-185 lbs for much of that time.
Then in grad school, I started to eat much worse including fast food trips and ordering in almost nightly.
One day I stepped on my scale and weighed 201 lbs, and that was the moment I got the long-term motivation to eat healthier and commit to a weight loss transformation.
I began to eat more natural whole foods, including grains, meats and vegetables. At this point I didn’t fully understand nutrition, and I still was treating myself with desserts every so often.
My weight returned to about 180 lbs, which seemed to be where my body wanted to stay.
A couple of years went by and that’s when I finally decided to experiment with a strict diet.
My choice was the “slow-carb” diet made popular by Tim Ferriss.
This brought me under 150 lbs without exercise for the first time in my life, but the problem was I started to include “cheat days” more than 1x per week.
Slowly, I gained back ALL my weight and returned to 180 lbs again.
In November 2015 I decided to go all-in on the keto diet and haven’t looked back since. I’ve lost over 35 lbs along my weight loss journey and I’m in the best physical shape of my life.
The keto diet has been the best way for me to lose weight, and I encourage you to try it and experience it, too.
